acoustic string trio - swing, bluegrass, ragtime, americana

I began sitting in with these guys during the summer of 2021, becoming more of a fixture recently.
Joe, on the guitar, and Pete Lister, on the string bass, are both phenomenal players and musicians, and also have an array of cool original songs to offer.
The repertoire includes some old americana favorites, gypsy jazz, ragtime, bluegrass, and some quirky country, prog, and rock covers - all served up in a signature style with tight harmonies.
The trio attracts a variety of guest performances and sit-in's, and sometimes adds drums or percussion when it suits the occasion.

solo/sideman

I do occasionally find the opportunity to play a solo set around the area.
And I sometimes sit in for a set with my good friend, singer/songwriter George Stass, usually in NYC.
I also play on occasion with guitarist Gary Reed, and with singer/songwriter Tom TC Carpenter around northern New Jersey and Pennsylvania.
I have also been lucky enough to play a few shows alongside a couple of my songwriter heroes:
Todd Sheaffer (Railroad Earth, From Good Homes), and Blake Christiana (Yarn).

With COVID came the advent of livestreaming as a primary form of concert. So, here's links to several of those:

Paused...

I was always surrounded by music in the house growing up. Mom and Dad were "folkies", so I heard Kingston Trio and Gordon Lightfoot as a kid, and my big brother and sister turned me on to the Beatles, Queen, America, and Little Feat. So starting from age 5, when the church folk choir practiced at our house, I pestered until they let me play - tambourine, ukulele, and ultimately guitar - and never let go.

Thru junior high and high school, it was church music, folk, classical, a rock band with friends from school, and late night jazz sessions at 219 Club (thanks, brother Pete). I also started singing, and in high school wound up in the madrigal choir (yup, men in tights) that also took on jazz, pop and classical arrangements.

While attending Ohio University, I dove into blues, rockabilly, and bluegrass, and picked up the mandolin and a bit of string bass along the way. WILLIN' toured regionally, played regularly in the Ohio college-town circuit, and released one album (ok, cassette).

After landing in NYC, I played and recorded with several singer-songwriters, consistently elevating the level of their performances with guitar, mandolin, and harmony vocals.  Having now settled in northwest New Jersey, I took a while to find the rhythm of the scene here, and have been working with bands and singer-songwriters to develop new music.  And, when the opportunity is presented, I perform an occasional solo set, stream, or recording.

I also write original songs, some of which are above, and a few of have made into rotation with JCT. And I have composed and/or recorded instrumental and incidental music for theater and movies.

    sound engineering & design

A career in sound reinforcement had its roots in junior high school, as the need to amplify band and theater projects arose.   Though I am sure I was inspired at an even-earlier age by Bill's home-brewed suitcase PA (literally built into suitcases) that we carted around for portable church services.
I studied sound - recording, production, film, and theater - receiving a degree in Audio Production from Ohio University, and I have been lucky to have a career doing something that still excites and engages me.   Designing and mixing sound (live sound in particular) is a perfect storm of technical skill mixed with artistry, and continues to challenge and teach me each day.

    live event production

Much of my audio work has been for live events in the NYC area, but I have also toured as FOH and/or monitor mixer and/or production manager, and designed & mixed for theater and mixed for broadcast & recordings.
I currently own Wavefront Music, a live event sound and production solutions provider based in New Jersey.   I have been co-owner of two prior live event sound and production companies, and also represented EM Acoustics loudspeakers for their sales in the US during their formative years.

    sound design for theater

I moved to New York City to work in the trenches doing sound design for theater, from black-boxes to Broadway, and learning the finer points of theatrical system design.
As owner of a rental and production shop for the last 25+ years, I have learned the 'art' of design (and packaging) efficiency, and applied my craft to an ever-growing array of industrial, corporate, and music productions.
This same skill set has allowed me to expand into comprehensive production design and integration, including drafting and creating bid specifications.

    video & livestreaming

The course of producing events for many years has led me to absorb and ultimately master many of the video & graphics technologies that work in tandem with audio and lighting for these events. And as a audio technician, I've designed and implemented communications systems on all scales.

Since March of 2020, the landscape has changed, and no more drastically that in the arena of live events. Streaming and "virtual" events were the lion's share of the work for over two years, and continue to be an integral element of current live productions. I have been obsessively learning the skills to work with the new hardware and software solutions, and to integrate these with traditional technologies to create hybrid events.

VMix, OBS, Unity Comms, Streamdeck, Bitfocus Companion, Dante, and many other graphics technologies have to be integrated across the world to produce events that are compelling, and staying up to date with the possibilities has become a full-time job. While some of these requirements are temporary, many of these technologies will remain a part of event production in the future.

    audio(visual) system engineering

I have spent the last 30+ years at the console or backstage, in roles ranging from console tech to stage manager to audio mixer (A1), for a wide range of concerts, theater, events, and recorded and live broadcast.  I excel in fast-paced corporate and gala events combining wireless mics, lecterns, and live musical entertainment.

I have mixed industrials and/or galas (recently) for: American Express, Baron Capital, BBC America, Childrens Specialized Hospital, Conservation International, Continental Airlines, Discovery Channel, Doctor Oz, Farmers Insurance, International Emmy Awards, Konica-Minolta, Mercedes-Benz, Microsoft, Nestle, Nike, NYU, Peabody Awards, R/GA Agency, Raymour & Flanigan, and Verizon.

Artists I have worked with include: 50Cent, Adele, Aerosmith, Al Green, Alanis Morrisette, Alicia Keys, Allman Brothers Band, Amos Lee, Anita Baker, Aretha Franklin, Barry Manilow, Bebel Gilberto, Beyonce, Blues Traveler, Bonnie Raitt, the Cars, Chris Martin, Counting Crows, Deborah Harry, Diana Ross, Dispatch, Dixie Chicks, Don Henley, Elvis Costello, the Fab Faux, Fall Out Boy, Gavin DeGraw, the Go-Go's, GreenSky Bluegrass, HelloGoodbye, Hugh Poole, James Taylor, Jesse Malin, John Legend, John Mayer, Jon BonJovi, Justin Timberlake, Kasabian, Les Paul, Lil' Wayne, Little Feat, Lyle Lovett, Marc Broussard, Maroon 5, Marshall Tucker Band, Ne-Yo, New York Dolls, Norah Jones, Outkast, Paramore, Patti LaBelle, Paul Simon, Railroad Earth, Rockapella, Rod Stewart, Rufus Wainwright, Run DMC, Salt 'N Pepa, Sarah McLachlan, Savion Glover, Shawn Colvin, Sheryl Crow, Snoop Dogg, Squeeze, Steve Earle, Toby Keith, Todd Sheaffer, Trace Adkins, Tracy Chapman, the Troggs, Vernon Reid, the Wailers, Willie Nelson, Yarn ...

    "sound-proofing" techniques & materials

As a natural extension of engineering and design, I am developing an ever-growing knowledge of acoustics, particularly room acoustics and how to design sound systems to work with them.

Acoustical services include analysis, measurement, prediction, and comprehensive reporting.

And since many of my friends think that acoustics means "soundproofing", I have also acquired a significant awareness of techniques and treatments to keep you (or the local bar or nightclub) from annoying the neighbors.
